What is social and emotional well-being?

“When an individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.”¹

We comprehensively reviewed the scientific literature, and seven key social and emotional well-being themes for students emerged: School, Mental Health, Safety, Self-Perception, Technology Use, Peers, and Physical Health. These areas work together to determine each student's overall quality of life in and outside the classroom.

Why does it matter?

Students' health, happiness, and safety affect school climate and student, parent, and teacher satisfaction. But it is also linked to many important school outcomes, such as academic performance, attendance, and graduation rates.²

In addition, mental and emotional challenges are rising among youth, inevitably affecting school performance.³ As stigma rapidly fades around mental health, students and parents expect innovative solutions to address these issues.

How do you measure it?

Researchers have been measuring well-being for over half a century, however, studying well-being in youth and students is more recent but promising.⁴ heardify has used and integrated this research to develop a comprehensive well-being assessment that targets the most high-impact areas.

You can find the assessment in the heardify Discover™ Platform, which is a customizable way to measure your students’ well-being.
